I've recently re-read this book in preparation for the latest, A Sum of all Kisses, and now I remember why I'd forgotten it. I was disappointed at the time because it just didn't feel like the writer's usually wonderful writing. It's hard to put my finger on exactly what's wrong but I guess it was the slightly sad tone to the book overall.

It's never an easy thing to come back from the basis of the h having lost her virtue carelessly at 16 to an unworthy man, who then goes on to become our villain. It's a fair enough, though regretful premise. The fact that the H returns after being a way on the continent for years because of a duel fought years in the past is also slightly sad. The thing that really doesn't work for me is how the H falls in love with the h and is willing to marry her so quickly, despite her lack of lineage etc. He's an Earl and I doubt there would have been so few obstacles. I know it's only a story and I'm not doing a very good job of describing why I didn't love the book, other than saying it's the tone.

The ending was good though, and saved the book from being really mediocre.

A Night like This

Oh my goodness. This one was funny. I seem to recall the first one was humorous as well, but this was great.
This Smythe-Smith series is turning out to be quite a good one. I can't wait for number 3 to come out.

It takes up right at the end of the first book, straight after the concert. A newly returned Daniel meets Anna the governess and substitute piano player in the hall behind the music room, then beats Marcus to a pulp when he finds him kissing Honoria.

Anna has been cast off from her family after an incident with a vile neighbour when she was 16. The neighbour discovers her whereabouts and is trying to get his revenge on her.

Well worth the read, its not overly long, just a few hours. Very entertaining, funny, as I already mentioned. Who the bad guy was, was a bit obvious but the well paced story more than makes up for it. Grab it, you won't be disappointed.
Julia Quinn books are fun, humorous and not particularly deep. Doesn't mean they're not hugely enjoyable!

I've read everything Julia Quinn has ever published and I'd have to say, this is the best since Romancing Mr Bridgerton (which is one of my all time favourites) the past few books (quite a few now!) she has written have been lacklustre, the light and frothy bubbled over into downright inconsequential, but I felt like Julia got it back with this book.

The characters were nice and fun and fleshed out. Daniel was swoon worthy, no intense brooding in a JQ book! Even in the final confrontation between the 'goodies' and the 'baddies' I was giggling to myself. That's the power of JQ ... it's just fun! Can't wait for the next Smythe-Smith (and loved the dialogue about where the name came from!). Well done Julia )
The adventures of the Smythe-Smith family are the most fun reading since the infamous Bridgerton family series. The Smythe-Smiths were first introduced in the Bridgerton series. Each year the family presents a musicale performed by four ladies from the large group of cousins. Each performance is memorable due to the fact that the Smythe-Smith family has no musical talent- but don't tell them!
In A Night Like This, Daniel arrives home from abroad on the eve of the annual musical. He discovers a new face in the quartet. Anne Wynter, governess of his cousins, has been required to stand in for his ill cousin. He is immediately attracted to Anne, but Anne has a secret that forces her to fight her desire for Daniel. Can Daniel find a way to convince Anne he can be trusted with both her secret and her heart?
I do not understand the harsh reviews for this book. I have read many of Julia Quinn's works, she is a favorite of mine, and this was a wonderful example of what I expect from her. It was a sweet, witty tale, full of poignant and humorous moments. What I love about Quinn's writing is that it is eternally lighthearted, even when tackling weighty subjects, without being inappropriate. And her way with writing dialogue is brilliant. The hero was swoon worthy, and there were no trite misunderstandings, a plague on the historical romance genre. Quinn's writing is effortless to read, and the story was enjoyable. I decided to write a review because several of the negative reviews dissuaded me from reading this book for quite a while. If you enjoy Julia Quinn's books, I should think you would enjoy this one very much. I give it 4.5 stars because I couldn't put it down, it had many moments that made me smile/swoon/tear up, and I guess Quinn's writing style is my cup of tea.
The second book in the Smythe-Smith Quartet tells the story of Daniel Smythe-Smith, the Earl of Winstead and Anne Wynter.

Daniel has returned to England three years after having seriously wounded his friend Hugh Prentice in a duel. Hugh's father has hunted Daniel around Europe in revenge for Hugh's injury. Hugh, who blames himself for the unfortunate duel, makes a deal with his father that allows Daniel to return to London. Daniel is now attempting to reclaim his life. However, he fears that Hugh's father still intends on seeking revenge.

The night of Daniel's return in the annual Smythe-Smith musicale. (His arrival is told in the first book of the series JUST LIKE HEAVEN). There he meets Anne, who is governess to some of Daniel's cousins. Anne has a tragic past because she was seduced by a neighbor and then cast out of her home by her parents. She is hiding from her past, but of course, in this book, her past comes back to confront her.

I liked this book, and I really liked Daniel. Unfortunately, I never really liked Anne all that much. I felt a great disconnect between her actions in the past and her current behavior. I understood intellectually her changes, but never felt that it was explained enough in her characterization.

That being said, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.
