Everything. He shows you EVERYTHING - from how the crew ate their meals, to what scurvy looked like, how they got tattoos, how they spent liberty, captain's quarters, sleeping conditions, the lavatories (if you could call them that!), some info on rigging, maggots in the biscuits, the origins of some nautical terms (like "Knots" and "Poop Deck"), battle and warfare, officer rankings and pay structure, burials at sea, surgery (amputations!), ship repairs, storage, bilges, galley, carpentry... endless!

A MUST for any naval history buff.

The only thing I would say is that it is not really for the squeamish, or the very young. Rated "PG" for sure - look it over before you give it to a young'un.

Cross Sections Man of War Stephen Biesty crosssections Stephen Biesty Richard Platt 9780681320208 Books Reviews

Nice packaging and fast delivery and good condition and good strong packing tape and not heavy at all and easy to open with that little pull strip and recoiled material and the book had page numbers and an index and a front cover and back cover and a nice easy to read font and pages that turned really easy and not stuck together and a good shape that fit in my book case and that's about it.
I bought a copy of this before they became too hard to find(not sure if they are in print anymore). The illustrations and text work well together.
Endlessly fascinating. I've picked this up and perused it dozens of times and it never fails to intrigue, amuse, and inform.

And if you have a boy in your family -- wow! -- will he love it.
I've always been fascinated with sailing man-of-war. When I first came across Stephen Biesty's book, I did not purchase it right away at the book store. Much to my regret, when I was ready to buy at a late date the book was no longer available.

When I bought this book via I was happy as a lark. I really enjoyed flipping the pages and looking at the ship and the author skillfully adding details about other aspect of life aboard sailing man-of-war. It had the right amount of information without being overly technical. Even if you don't read the text the pictures alone would keep the reader (both children and adult) enthralled. Well, if you're into history I think you well.
What a brilliant book. I have spent hours poring over it and will spend many more. The illustrations are brilliant and the accompanying text does them justice. The sheer detail is mind-blowing. You feel yourself drawn into the pages themselves, making you one with the ship and her crew. A great book for both young and old.
The book's information is all over the map. The drawings are vaguely cartoonish. Both things are positive selling points for me. Spending time riffling through the pages is always fun. I've learned a few things I didn't get with my other Aubrey companion books and taken altogether the book serves as a nice refresher or distillation for the more intense reading I've done on the same subject.

What I didn't like about the experience, and this is nobody's fault but mine I wound up paying $50 for a book that only cost $17. It's not worth $50 but $17 or even $25 is more than fair.
Dorling Kindersley has in the past twenty years quickly established itself as an outstanding publisher of niche books--children's reference books, travel guides, atlases, and the such. What I find so remarkable about a number of their children's books is how enormously satisfying they are for adults as well, even adults who are fairly familiar with the subject matter. One of the better series of books in their impressive list are the Cross-Sections books by Stephen Biesty. As someone who is interested both in the history of ships and the Aubrey-Maturin novels by Patrick O'Brian, I find this one even more interesting than most.
Two things stand out about this book its remarkably detailed drawings and the enormous amount of information that gets stuffed into the book's relatively short length. This book provides a pictorial rendering of one of the great ships of the line of the Napoleonic navy, similar to H.M.S. Victory. Virtually nothing gets left out, and the book can actually serve as a surprisingly comprehensive introduction to the Royal British Navy during the time of Nelson and Napoleon. It is somewhat misleading in that the ship depicted was the exception and not the norm, the British navy possessing only a handful of ships this size. Apart from that the book has no serious flaws, except for the unaffordable one in a visual guide that it is sometimes hard to locate information in its closely packed pages.
I would also recommend another Dorling Kindersley book, also unfortunately out of print, THE VISUAL DICTIONARY OF SHIPS AND SAILING. It does a bit better job than this one of defining many nautical terms. Each represents a marvelous addition to personal library of books on the age of the sailing ship.
