Heheh, I love reading scary books on dark stormy nights. When this story began, I thought maybe it was too juvenile for me, a preteen book. After I was finished I realized I had been holding my breath throughout the last few chapters. While I think this book will be a good read for my daughter, I also thoroughly enjoyed the book myself. The main character Mattie is endearing and honest, and the whole story is in her thoughts, actions, and words. I have read this twice already, and will probably read it again someday soon. I will pass it on to my 12 year old daughter to read; it does not have a lot of gore, sex, or anything else I would normally try to protect her from, and I think she would enjoy this story.Tags : The Ghost Files - Kindle edition by Apryl Baker. The Ghost Files edition by Apryl Baker Children eBooks Reviews
Its been a long time since I have gotten so wrapped up in a book that wasn't a romance, and I absolutely loved it. The mystery, suspense, paranormal, and even the little cliffhanger at the end. I'm just happy that I came into the series so late and don't have to wait for the next release. Unlike with the manwhore series I read the first book just after it was released and have had to wait not so patiently for each book after. Thats the only plus side to having waited so long to read this book/series. I was actually pretty surprised to find myself at the end of the book so fast. Normally I find myself checking to see how much of the book I have left so I know how close I am to losing my beloved characters, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it with this one and before I knew it, the case was solved.
Mattie & Dan were great characters, they worked so well together, and had that instant bond going. I love that they have something there but it isn't quite something yet or maybe won't ever go further but it glues them together one way or another. I also like all the other side characters, Eric was great and I had that feeling that I just wished he had a second chance because he seemed so fun. Mason - for a second there I thought it was little bit of a cross over - but he was a fun flirty character.
Can't wait to start book two and I am sure the book/series will end up on my re-read list.
Mattie Hathaway just ignores the ghosts she sees. Her life is tough enough without them pestering her. Her newest foster home is a good one, and she even gets along halfway with her foster sister, Sally. Until Sally disappears and Mattie sees her ghost. Gaining the trust of a young police officer, Dan, she tries to find out who murdered Sally. What she finds is so much more. And if Mattie keeps digging, she could be the next victim.
This YA paranormal is a fun and fast read. I love ghost stories, and there is plenty of the supernatural here. Lots of dark and creepy bits. Mattie got on my nerves at times, but she is a sixteen-year-old who doesn't trust people. It's easy to sympathize with her in that she has had a difficult life and it's made her tough. I did really like that the foster kids looked out for one another when no one else would. I really liked Dan and his interaction with Mattie, but I didn't understand his attraction to her. Yet I enjoyed all the spooky parts and the ghosts that I am happy to give this four stars.
Upon reading the first couple of chapters, I wasn’t sure if I’d finish this one. It could use a more polished writing style and better editing, to be sure. Actually, the story was fairly interesting. It had a cool Supernatural-ish feel, so much that I expected a Dean and Sam appearance at some point. For me, the larger problems in the story lie in Mattie’s over-the-top description of her appearance, cute boys, and powers. For example, of course she’s super hot and every boy falls in love with her. There wasn’t enough average-ness, if you know what I mean, so the story didn’t feel authentic.
Still, I finished The Ghost Files volume 1 and plan to read the next one. I feel invested in the characters now, and I want to find out what happens with Mattie. It was an easy read and there seem to be several titles in the series, so it might keep me busy for a couple of days!
I don't often read ghost stories, but the premise of "The Ghost Files v. 1" -- about a teen girl who can see dead people -- seemed interesting. I know, "The Sixth Sense" already covered this subject and it's been done to death, but I was curious to see how another author could pull it off. And it made me wonder just how this book would cover the supernatural element, and what sort of twists she could give it. Ghosts are a versatile subject matter, much like dragons and vampires, and the creative possibilities are nearly endless.
While there's some fascinating ideas in this volume, the execution was somewhat weak. The writing's not stellar, the main character is annoying, and there are some weird twists about the resolution that come out of nowhere.
Sixteen-year-old Mattie Hathaway has lived in the foster care system since she was five, when her mother tried to stab her to death in an attempted murder-suicide. Since that fateful night, Mattie has been able to see ghosts, but she does her dogged best to ignore them and just go on with her life. But when she sees a fellow foster kid's ghost at a party, she realizes that there's a killer on the loose, and she must use her ability to track them down. With help from a skeptical but helpful young police officer, a paranormal researcher, and the ghosts of the young victims themselves, Mattie sets out to find a serial killer... but will the killer find her first, and sentence her to the same fate?
The writing of this book isn't terribly stellar, but it gets the job done. It's a little bland, and Apryl Baker has a tendency to repeat herself annoyingly, but the voice she's given Mattie is distinctive, feisty but with a hint of the lost, scared little girl beneath the tough exterior. I've certainly read worse writing, and it tells the story without jarring me out with bad continuity errors or grammar goofs.
Mattie herself gets annoying at times. I understand that the foster care system often damages kids caught up in it, sometimes beyond repair, but Mattie's prickly attitude and her tendency to push people away and mope about how "everyone leaves me" gets irritating. Other characters are little more than stereotypes, save Officer Dan, who's a bland "good boy" without much in the way of personality. (On another note, Mattie and Dan's relationship comes across as creepy, considering he's a cop and she's underage -- I could have done without the romantic undertones to their relationship.)
All that said, I was still drawn into this story. They mystery of the killer kept me hooked -- but then, I'm a "Criminal Minds" fan and a sucker for a hunt for a murderer. Also, Baker has come up with a fascinating inner mythology for this book, explaining Mattie's abilities and her role in the world of the dead. It's an interesting premise... I just wish it had been told better.
SPOILERS AHEAD
The identity of the killer came as a bit of a surprise, though it wasn't terribly shocking... but the author decides to throw in a completely unforeshadowed twist in giving the killer multiple personalities (or, more correctly, Disassociative Identity Disorder). This technique was probably shocking and chilling when it first came up (most notably in Thomas Tryon's "The Other"), but by this point it's been done to death. And it added nothing whatsoever to the story.
While an interesting read and with some good concepts, I found this book to be mostly "just okay." I enjoyed reading it, but don't feel compelled to finish the series despite the obvious hook ending. (Though thankfully it doesn't end on a cliffhanger like some free e-books are wont to do...) I do applaud Baker's creativity, and wish her the best of luck with this series, even if I'm stepping away from it and moving on to something else.
