I loved the first book, The Lotus Palace. I think you can read the second book as a stand alone, but you might as well read The Lotus Palace first because it's really really good.I like mysteries, I like historical fiction, and I like romance. Lin's book has it all.
The mystery was done better here than in the first book. I liked Mingyu and Kaifeng's romance as well, but I think I still enjoyed the romance of The Lotus Palace better.
Mingyu and Kaifeng are both well drawn characters and fully emerged in the complexities of their world, which makes for more superb storytelling since the setting in the historical pleasure district was fascinating. The politics involved added more to the puzzle (I was wrong about the killer, but there was at least two good suspects to choose from).
Mingyu and Keifeng are not just two people attracted to each other, they are also two people very, very good at their careers. It's who they are, it defines them: Mingyu is a famous courtesan and Kaifeng is a constable. How different can a couple get? It's great to watch them grow together, and watch them change things for one another in the end.
There was a certain unpleasant character that Mingyu had to contend with; I absolutely loved how she ultimately handled him. She remained true to her character and upbringing as a courtesan in dealing with him--and she really kicked his butt. That's my girl.
I liked Kaifeng, too. Perhaps not as much as Bai Huang from the first book, but Kaifeng can be quite humorous in his bluntness. There's a certain ineptness in how he deals with people around him--even in how he understands them--that makes you laugh and then sigh at his lack of social grace. He's not a people person which makes it more interesting that he and Mingyu fall for another.
Kaifeng, however, was able to bring about the best ending I've read in a romance for a while. I felt the two still had a lot of uncertainty in the future, but the end scene was believable and sweet.
I don't know if there are any books coming out in this series? But I would really like to read more.

Just as The Dragon and The Pearl was the perfect sequel to The Butterfly Swords, The Jade Temptress is the perfect sequel to The Lotus Palace. Once again the author has followed a more traditional romance with another devoted a less poetically matched pair. I was delighted with The Lotus Palace' perfect balance of mystery and romance and The Jade Temptress is equally well plotted with a perfect conclusion. I hope there is more to follow.
At first I wasn't sure about this book but as I read on I became enthralled. Wu Kaifeng and Lady Mingyu are sooo much more interesting than Yue-Ying and Bai Huang. I was captured by the prose and the ability the authoress has for transporting me into a different cultural setting in an effortless way. It helps that the author intimately knows what she is talking about and I just enjoyed every moment of the book. It never lost its shine like the first one and I truly felt for the main couple. Lin has really improve in her writing and her pacing has improve greatly.
Kaifeng and Mingyu relationship was this effortless flow of events that felt organic and never forced in any way. At first I was leery of ever feeling their love and connection but Lin proved me wrong. I felt their love, I felt the impossibility of their relationship and the despair at circumstances that set them apart. I was also incredibly happy that Mingyu was able to escape her infuriating suitor, Magistrate Li, on her own, it was an empowering moment to see her escape her fate. I want to read more books Jeannie Lin.
After reading both "The Jade Temptress" and "The Lotus Palace", I'm now a huge fan of Jeannie Lin's writing. "The Jade Temptress" is a good blend of mystery and romance. I love the ancient China setting. It's different yet not so exotic that it feels totally unfamiliar or uncomfortable. The characters are well developed and interesting. They are true to their time and culture, yet easy to relate to and root for. I liked the fact that they were lower class, not royalty. The mystery was well-developed. Ms. Lin writes beautifully. This was a real page-turner for me. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical romances.
I understand this is Ms. Lin's last book for the publisher Harlequin. They've dropped her due to slow sales of her previous books. I guess books set in ancient China are a tough sell in the historical romance market. That's a real shame. She is such a good writer. I hope she finds a home at another publishing house or ventures into self-publishing. I'm going to work my way through her previously published books for Harlequin, but I'm hoping there will be more to buy in the future.
Review
Okay, first of all just look at this cover. I loved the cover for "The Lotus Palace" - first book in this series, but this, I think I love it even better, the model is gorgeous and the green blue color combinations is stunning if you ask me.
I do not know how Jeannie Lin does it - I mean, she definitely transports me to Ancient China in these books, I completely forgot that I did not belong to that time and place. Her writing is beautiful and fluid, I never ever felt that the book stumbled over anything if that makes sense.
And she does not stop with the setting - characters are so very real and romance is built up slowly, we truly watch Mingyu and Wu fall in love, trying to deny that they did and at the end just surrendering to their mutual love. They are both flawed characters - same as I noticed in the first book, her main characters were flawed but likeable, and their flaws made so much sense based on what kind of lives they lead. I mean, isn't it what is happening in life? Some part of your personality is given to you in your genes, but some is formed by your life experiences as well.
I also thought that mystery was more complicated and interesting in this book.
Highly highly recommended.
