The Captive King A Royal States Novel eBook Susan Copperfield

This book had some promise, especially fascinating subject matter, about which the author seems to be knowledgeable. Mesoamerican cultures are a particular interest of mine and I was really hoping that this would be a good read. Unfortunately, the heroine appears to have a mental health issue. "Oh, gee, I had a temper tantrum and blew up something at the last location, which turned out terribly for me (although it did have the not-so-coincidental benefit of providing the author with a excuse to explain why I fell down a well/ended up somewhere/have to deal with xyz issue), so how about I do it again?" (Oh, and just in case you start to get annoyed by this only marginally believable plotline, Im going to glibly say in my heroine's voice "Oh, well, I was tired last time"- just before indulging the same 5-year-old behaviors again...?!) The main character is at best unconvincing and at worst, so unbelievable as to be repellant.

The Captive King A Royal States Novel eBook Susan Copperfield Reviews

The absolute only thing I didn't like about this book was the mind numbing amounts of ancient history. Found it fascinating to a point and then I skimmed over a lot of it. Barring that? I ADORED this book. I'll be pre ordering every book on the Royal States of America. It's completely unique, great in depth characters and very well written. I'm an absolute bookworm and it's sometimes really hard to impress me. This series does the trick nicely.
I really liked this story and will be rereading it soon to pick up on the details I missed at 3 AM.

Cassidy is an interesting character who many a former doctoral student or intern will identify with and the book shows lots of personal growth kickstarted by an interesting evening with the H.

I was keeping my eyes peeled for updates on characters from Null and Void.
Susan has done it again. A book that just sucks you in and wont let you finish until the very last page. I have always loved history and laughed my butt off when Cassidy is trying to sell the necklace while telling the elites how people were sacrificed. It is this tounge in cheek sarcastic humor that has me falling in love with these books. The details that goes into each story are phenomenal from the plot setup, pace of book, world building, characters we meet. This is why i am a fan for life. The attention to details are sooo great.
Also how can you know love a world that has magic? I certainly do.

Cassisdy is one of my most favorite types of characters, she is stubborn, loyal and independent to a fault almost. But what could possibly be a weakness in others is just pure strength in Cassidy. She tells the world froget you and keeps going when most others would have fallen. But when she comes across thise that have fallen due to the world she picks them up and males them truge along with her.

She meets Bachelor 103 at the Elite auction where her boss has sent her to sell a priceless necklace to keep the archeological dig open where it was found. The sparks fly between these two along with sarcasm, heat and a few eye opening moments. But as we all know ( for me it was Indiana Jones who taught me) when it comes to priceless artifacts from archeological digs sometimes there are curses attached. Or are there. With the selling of the artifact the fun begins for both Cassidy and Bachelor 103. Both separate and together. And wow was it some fun in this book. I both laughed at Cassidy and also was right with her as she wanted to commit some violence. I love her brand of violence aka revenge by the way. This was a great book in the Royal States of America series and can be read indepyfrom Null and Void but if you have read book 1 GO anf get it also.
I cant wait to read the next novel of the Royal States of America as i am LOVINH this series.
The book starts off good, unfortunately, the first chapter is the best. After that, the book suffers from inconsistent plotting and frequently deviates into long ramblings about Mayan, etc culture usually about the time something is about to happen which breaks the pacing of the book. The entire sequence of dealing with abuse is a completely unneeded plot aspect and does little more than make the H even less likeable. I greatly enjoyed the first book in the series, but this one suffered from unlikable and whiny characters and significant lack of plot. There were also a lot of editing errors with words missing, incorrectly used or mispelled (included names). The only part of the book I really enjoyed was the brief discussion of the Mayan, etc culture and that was often disruptive to the story flow.
Sucked in from the first chapter.

When I was a practicing archaeologist I would have loved to had some of the magic used in the story. But our world is more mundane than the Royal States world. Sigh.

Cassidy is stubborn and possibly cursed, answer is in the book. She just keeps going when others would give up. This is who I am, take it or leave it personality.

Bachelor 103 may also be cursed, again in the book. He doesn't emerge as a more complex character until later in the book.

Definitely Cassidy's story with her personal growth a focus point. The two come together then separate several times but the story is compelling whether they're together or not.

Some hard issues in one kingdom are addressed, more is revealed of the overall world and the caste system that is based on magic. Some characters from Null and Void appear, subtly and not so subtly.

Terrific story, what I've come to expect from RJ Blain and why her books are on my auto buy list. Looking forward to the next Royal States story and definitely re-reading this one as soon as I can, I'm sure that I missed many details in my rush to read to the end.

Get the story and start reading, it's worth the lost sleep.
